Why Do I Insist That Clients Must Disclose Their Health History Honestly?

Fact: Successfully buying insurance today does not guarantee that you will be able to rely on it in the future.

This is a real case that left a deep impression on me.

In 2017, the client had a blood test at a nearby clinic and laboratory. The report already showed abnormal diabetes-related readings.

In 2021, when he applied for medical insurance, he did not disclose this health information.

In 2024, he underwent heart surgery, with medical expenses of nearly RM100,000.

During the surgery, his medical card worked as expected, and the insurance company paid for the hospitalisation.

However, during a subsequent review, the insurer discovered his 2017 blood-test records and terminated his medical coverage in accordance with the policy terms.

What affected me most was not the nearly RM100,000 medical bill.

It was the fact that he was only forty years old.

He still had a long life ahead of him. What would happen to his medical risks over the next few decades?

Many people take a chance and think:

“It was only a blood test.” “There were no symptoms and no medication, so I probably did not need to mention it.” “It was not done at a major hospital, so nobody would know.”

But insurance is not a test of luck. It is built on honest disclosure.

Faith’s observation

I would rather spend more time with a client today to complete a proper health disclosure than have them discover years later—when they truly need their policy—that it can no longer protect them.

What truly matters is not simply buying insurance. It is first understanding what insurance can solve, and then deciding whether it is suitable for you.
